The Story Behind the Craft

Every piece of wood has a story.  My job is to reveal it.

Hello, I'm Alain Dugas, an intarsia artist from Quebec. From my workshop just outside Montreal, I transform carefully selected pieces of wood into handcrafted works of art that celebrate history, music, nature, and the people who inspire us.

Wood has fascinated me for as long as I can remember. Every species has its own character—its own colour, grain, texture and personality. While most people see a board, I see a palette waiting to become something unique.

After spending 39 years in Information Technology, retirement gave me the opportunity to dedicate myself to a passion that had quietly grown for decades.

My Journey

Around the year 2000, I discovered intarsia—the art of creating detailed images by fitting together individually shaped pieces of natural wood. It combined everything I loved: woodworking, creativity, problem solving, and attention to detail. What began as a hobby soon became a true passion.

Today, every piece I create is designed, cut, shaped, sanded, and assembled entirely by hand in my workshop. There are no production lines, no shortcuts, and no two pieces are ever exactly alike.

My Philosophy

I often say that "wood is my paint". Instead of brushes and colours, I work with walnut, maple, cherry, padauk, purpleheart, ebony, and many other beautiful species. Their natural colours and grain patterns create depth and movement that simply can't be duplicated with paint.

One of the most rewarding moments is watching a collection of ordinary pieces slowly come together into something that tells a story. That's the magic of intarsia.

Guitar Legends

Music has always been one of my greatest inspirations. My newest collection, Guitar Legends, celebrates some of the world's most iconic musicians through handcrafted shadow boxes. Each piece features an intarsia replica of a legendary instrument paired with an engraved portrait and a short biography of the artist who made that guitar famous.

Every shadow box is created individually and is intended to be both a conversation piece and a tribute to the musician's legacy. If you're a guitarist, music lover, or collector, I hope these pieces bring back memories of the songs that shaped your life.

Every guitar has a story. Every shadow box tells it in wood.

More Than Decoration

Many of my projects commemorate important moments in history, honour military service, celebrate wildlife, or preserve cherished family memories through custom commissions. Whether I'm building a military tribute, a wildlife scene, or a favourite guitar, my goal is always the same: Create something meaningful that will be treasured for generations.

A Workshop Built on Passion

My workshop is where ideas become reality. Every project begins with an idea and evolves through hours of cutting, shaping, sanding, fitting, and finishing by hand.

Creating intarsia isn't about working quickly. It's about enjoying the journey and respecting the natural beauty of the wood.

Thank You for Visiting

Thank you for taking the time to explore my work. Whether you're simply discovering intarsia for the first time, searching for a unique piece of art, or considering a custom commission, I'm honoured that you've stopped by. If one of my creations speaks to you—or if you have an idea you'd like to bring to life—I would be delighted to hear from you.

Every project begins with a conversation. I hope you enjoy exploring my work as much as I've enjoyed creating it.
