The Story
Kirk Hammett's relationship with ESP began in the late 1980s, when he worked with the company to create a guitar specifically suited to his playing. The resulting instruments became the foundation for what would eventually become the ESP KH signature series.
The black guitar recreated in this shadow box was built in 1991 and became one of Kirk's principal instruments during Metallica's enormous Black Album touring period. At first, it was simply a black ESP. The now-famous warning stickers were added later, transforming it into the instantly recognizable “Caution Hot” guitar.
The guitar was built for speed and punishment: a maple neck, 24-fret fingerboard, Floyd Rose tremolo and powerful EMG pickups gave Hammett the tools required for his aggressive rhythm and lead playing.
Then came the orange sticker. “CAUTION HOT”
Along with the small “Kirk's Guitar” label, it turned an already distinctive instrument into something unmistakably Hammett.
Why This Guitar Matters
The Caution Hot represents Kirk Hammett at one of the most important points in Metallica's history.
The Black Album transformed Metallica from one of the world's biggest metal bands into a global phenomenon. Kirk's solos and lead work became instantly recognizable, while his ESP guitars became an essential part of the band's visual identity.
Unlike a highly decorated custom guitar, the Caution Hot is almost brutally simple: black finish, black hardware, skull-and-crossbones inlays and one screaming orange warning label.
It looks like a Metallica guitar should look.
The Craft Behind the Tribute
Every Guitar Legends shadow box begins with careful research. Before selecting a single piece of wood, I study the instrument, its history, the musician who played it, and the performances that made it unforgettable.
For the Caution Hot, the challenge was capturing the understated aggression of the original. The black finish had to remain deep and powerful without losing the subtle details of the body, pickups and hardware.
The engraved images of Kirk performing reinforce the connection between the guitarist and the instrument, while his signature and the Metallica logo complete the story.
And of course, the CAUTION HOT sticker had to be there. It may be a tiny detail, but it is one of the things that makes this particular ESP immediately recognizable.
Each component is individually handcrafted, assembled and finished to create a one-of-a-kind tribute celebrating both musical history and one of metal's most influential guitarists.
Design Philosophy
The Caution Hot doesn't need decoration to make an impression.
Its power comes from contrast: an almost completely black instrument interrupted by the bright orange warning label and the distinctive skull-and-crossbones inlays.
My goal was to preserve that visual simplicity while using natural wood grain and hand-finishing to give the tribute its own character.

For Kirk Hammett's Caution Hot, the focus is on the features that made the guitar recognizable on stage—the black ESP body, pointed headstock, skull-and-crossbones inlays, Floyd Rose tremolo and, of course, the unmistakable orange CAUTION HOT sticker.
The engraved images show Hammett with his ESP during the era when Metallica was reaching an entirely new level of worldwide success.
Caution Hot Through the Years

1987 – Kirk Hammett begins working with ESP, helping develop the instruments that would become the foundation for his signature guitar series.

Today – The guitar's distinctive combination of black finish and warning-label graphics has inspired ESP's later KH-2 Vintage recreation.
The guitar wasn't originally “Caution Hot.”
When Kirk first received it, it was simply a black ESP. The orange CAUTION HOT sticker was added later, along with the small label identifying it as “Kirk's Guitar.” Those little stickers transformed an otherwise understated black guitar into one of the most recognizable instruments in Kirk Hammett's collection.
And there's another great bit of history: this guitar was actually the second instrument created from the early ESP design that became the KH-2. Kirk loved the first ESP so much that he asked for another one to take on tour—and ended up taking both.
